深研院宣(文、图/赵亚红) 9月3日下午，应深圳市互联网信息协同技术及应用重点实验室张海军老师邀请，香港城市大学教授Tommy W.S. Chow在A栋507教室，为我院师生做了一场题为“Feature Selection & Dimension Reduction On Carotid artery Diagnosis” 的学术讲座。
    讲座中，Tommy W.S. Chow 教授首先介绍了在大数据时代，存在海量、高维和噪声数据等复杂环境下，特征选择的重要意义，并结合工业实践就特征选择的成功应用案例做了生动描述。特征选择不仅在机器学习中得到了广泛应用，而且受生物学的启发，他所带领的研究小组第一次用特征选择解决了一系列no-IT和no-engineering问题，并展示了实验结果。最后，他总结了特征选择在生物医药领域中的重要意义，及其潜在的研究方向。
    讲座结束后， Chow教授详尽回答了师生提出的问题。随后，与深圳市互联网信息协同技术及应用重点实验室师生们进行了广泛的学术交流，认真聆听了博士们的研究课题，并提出了宝贵意见。
主讲人简历：
    Tommy W.S. Chow professor is a Professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. He received his Ph.D. Degree from University of Sunderland， U.K. in 1988 and returned Hong Kong to join the Electronic Engineering Department of the University.
    His research interests are in the area of Machine Learning including supervised and unsupervised learning, data mining, pattern recognition and fault diagnostic. Now, he works on high dimensional feature selection, data reduction, data visualization, etc.
    Until now, he has published over 150 referred papers in international journals, 5 book chapters, and over 70 technical papers in international conference proceedings. He has also published a monograph book on Neural Networks. He received the Best paper award in the 2002 IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Annual meeting at Seville, Spain.
